The Stained Glass Artist and Wildlife Advocate
Julia is the artist behind our stained-glass art at KahanArts. Colors and glass have always intrigued her, and she incorporated these colorful glasses into images of animals that inspired her work.
From Medicine to Art
Julia transforms stained glass into vibrant works celebrating animals, nature, music, and the moments that connect us. After a distinguished 30-year career as an orthopedic surgeon, Julia followed her lifelong passion for art, combining technical precision with creative expression through stained glass.
She studied stained glass at Aanraku Glass Studio and has exhibited her work throughout Northern California, including the Mirada Art Gallery in Half Moon Bay, the Los Altos Art & Wine Festival, Silicon Valley Open Studios, the Portola Valley Art Festival, the North Tahoe Arts Center, Art in the Square Holiday Fair, and numerous charitable exhibitions benefiting animal welfare organizations. In 2026, Julia was highlighted in the Los Altos Art & Wine Festival magazine, where her work and artistic journey were highlighted in a three-page feature. She has also been recognized by the Los Altos Art Club and has exhibited in the Delphi National Art Glass Competition and Artist Network competitions.
Animals are at the heart of Julia’s work and her mission. She is passionate about creating artwork that tells a story, evokes memories, and brings joy. Whether depicting beloved pets, wildlife, or meaningful life experiences, each piece is individually designed and handcrafted using traditional stained glass techniques.
Julia welcomes commissions and enjoys teaching others the art of stained glass.
Creating Stained Glass Art
Each stained glass artwork begins with a unique vision- whether inspired by one of Julia’s original photographs, the natural world, or an original concept. A custom pattern is created before each piece of glass is carefully chosen for its color, texture and ability to capture light to recreate the scene while embracing the unique qualities of stained glass.
Every glass piece is hand scored, cut, shaped, and fitted before being wrapped in copper foil and soldered together. The artwork is then framed and polished, resulting in a handcrafted piece that reflects both the beauty of nature and the artistry of the stained glass tradition.
Helping Animals
She combines her love for animals, colors, and working with her hands in every stained-glass art. Julia is deeply committed to animal welfare, donating proceeds from her art to animal rescue organizations. Her work reflects a unique blend of technical precision, artistic passion, and a profound connection to nature and animals.
